All levels of government must take action to protect jobs and preserve the manufacturing capacity in the Oshawa GM plant. Despite receiving $10.8 billion in public handouts, and making record profits ever since, General Motors has decided to leave Oshawa, causing 5,000 workers at GM and supplier companies to lose their jobs, and 20,000 jobs being taken out of the community.
It is time to reimagine what the plant could do. Climate change presents both an urgent threat and an opportunity to transition off fossil fuels to an economy with good green jobs. We demand that governments step in to ensure that the Oshawa plant is converted into a Canadian manufacturing hub for electric vehicles and other sustainable energy products. This requires public ownership of the plant, with provisions for a democratic engagement of local governments and workers in the process. Public ownership of the Oshawa plant would not only save thousands of jobs, it could help kick start a just transition by manufacturing electric vehicles, starting with replacement vehicles for Canada Post.
The future of Oshawa is in your hands. You have the opportunity to chart a strong course of growth for not only the city of Oshawa, but the entire Canadian economy. You can help Canada become a leader in renewable energy, with thousands of new good green jobs. We ask you to seize that opportunity now.
