GM Oshawa Matters

Productive jobs with decent pay are crucial for the wellbeing of our communities in Durham Region and the GTA. The end of vehicle production at GM Oshawa would lead in just two years to the loss of 33,000 total jobs; the loss of $5.7 billion to Ontario's economy; and the loss of $1 billion in government revenue.

GM survived the economic crisis because of the $10.8 billion in support from the citizens of Ontario and Canada. GM workers and retirees were forced to accept concessions during the financial crisis, and they have not had any increases in the 7 years since then. GM Oshawa workers have continued to meet the highest standards of quality, cost and productivity of all North American auto plants.

GM has now returned to profitability, earning more than $34 billion (US) in the past 5 years, and is handsomely rewarding their executives. GM is investing billions of dollars in Mexico and China, but has refused to commit to investing in manufacturing jobs in Oshawa.

The Message:

Prime Minister Trudeau, Premier Wynne, Ministers, MPPs and MPs,

As a citizen, I want my Provincial and Federal governments to get involved to save good manufacturing jobs at GM Oshawa.

General Motors received $10.8 billion from your governments to save them from bankruptcy during the economic crisis. GM forced workers and retirees to accept concessions in 2009, and they have not had any increases in the 7 years since then. Their return to profitability has given GM billions of dollars which they are now using to reward their executives, and to fund investments in Mexico and China.

As leaders of the Provincial and Federal governments, you must act now to demand that General Motors commit to a new product for the Oshawa plant. They owe it to our communities; they owe it to the workers; they owe it to the retirees.

Thank you for your attention on this matter.

Sincerely,
