Productive jobs with decent pay are crucial for the wellbeing of our communities in Durham Region and the GTA. The end of vehicle production at GM Oshawa would lead in just two years to the loss of 33,000 total jobs; the loss of $5.7 billion to Ontario's economy; and the loss of $1 billion in government revenue.
GM survived the economic crisis because of the $10.8 billion in support from the citizens of Ontario and Canada. GM workers and retirees were forced to accept concessions during the financial crisis, and they have not had any increases in the 7 years since then. GM Oshawa workers have continued to meet the highest standards of quality, cost and productivity of all North American auto plants.
GM has now returned to profitability, earning more than $34 billion (US) in the past 5 years, and is handsomely rewarding their executives. GM is investing billions of dollars in Mexico and China, but has refused to commit to investing in manufacturing jobs in Oshawa.
