Stop Trump’s tariffs on pulp & paper mills

U.S. tariffs announced in March 2018 are poised to kill more than 1,500 Canadian jobs. Tell Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources Jim Carr to take immediate action to defend good jobs and local communities. It’s time to stand up to Donald Trump.

The Message:

Dear Honourable Minister Carr,

Five Canadian pulp mills are poised to close down as a direct result of new U.S. tariffs. This is not a drill.

With the announcement of a new 22 per cent tariff, Canadian newsprint companies Kruger Inc. in Western Newfoundland and Quebec and Catalyst Paper on the coast of British Columbia are facing a combined tariff of 32 per cent. If levied the tariffs will push these two companies into a position in which they cannot compete with American counterparts. Closure of the mills is almost a certainty.

I write to you today to ask that you and your government to take immediate action to stand up to American bullying and extend financial protections to Canadian mills that have unfairly been targeted by President Donald Trump.

Small communities surrounding Kruger and Catalyst rely on these good jobs and the hundreds of millions of dollars in spin-off economic activity. The regional economic impact of a mill closure will be severe. We estimate that every forestry job creates 1.3 additional jobs.

On November 12, 2015 Prime Minister Trudeau outlined a mandate for this ministry and “made a commitment to invest in growing our economy, strengthening the middle class, and helping those working hard to join it.” Please make good Canadian forestry jobs a top priority. There is no time to waste.
