Public Awareness Campaign / Letter to Member of Parliament - Off-shoring of Jobs

Dear Member of Parliament,

I am writing to you to express my concern about the alarming number of jobs in Canada being exported to other countries by companies that make their profits in Canada.  This is an important issue that you and your fellow MPs should give serious consideration to and discuss at caucus meetings.

The numbers speak volumes.  For example, Telus International has opened its fourth facility in the Philippines.  Telus has disclosed that it aims to expand the facility that provides inbound customer care, outbound sales, market research and business process solutions to its full capacity of at least 3,000 workers.  That’s 3,000 Canadian jobs that could have been created at home, not to mention the 8,000 workers it already employs at other sites in the Philippines.  Thousands of jobs that used to be performed by Canadians are now done abroad.

Most recently, employees from Telus’ Business Transformation and Technology Operations were stunned to learn that 400 engineering and technical jobs would be outsourced to India in the coming months.  Telus has now opened a centre in Guatemala and is hiring people to perform jobs that Canadian workers would previously have been hired to do.

Telus Corporation reported a staggering income of $3.5 billion on $9.6 billion in revenue, according to Telus’ investor fact sheet for 2009.  Canadian workers at Telus are losing their present and future job opportunities to other countries.  It would appear that all jobs that can be performed remotely are at serious risk of being sent offshore.

I feel that it is important to continue monitoring the loss of jobs to workers abroad.  Many of these are highly-skilled jobs, providing a living wage and benefits.  It is essential that they remain in Canada.  It is also important to consider how many jobs are now not being created in Canada as a result of companies selling their services here and expanding their workforces abroad.  We need to promote the creation of jobs in Canada instead of exporting them.

I urge you to support Canadian workers and their communities by helping to stop companies from sending Canadian work abroad.
