Dear MP:

I am aware of the Canada Post Strategic Review that is underway and I know MPs will be invited to provide some input to the Review Panel.

As a constituent, I want you to know that I care about our post office and I want it to remain public, universal and affordable. I understand that the federal government has ruled out privatization of Canada Post, but is still leaving the door open to deregulation.

Removing Canada Post’s “exclusive privilege” to deliver letters would erode Canada Post’s revenue base and place an  undue cost burden on the public post office. This could lead to higher postage rates.

Deregulation also leads to the loss of good jobs. When private companies bid on contracts for mail delivery, they inevitably cut costs by replacing unionized well-paying jobs with non-unionized jobs at much lower pay rates.

I am seriously concerned about the safety and privacy of Canada’s mail. If mail delivery were to be contracted out to a series of companies, it would make it much more difficult to ensure adequate security standards in several different workplaces. Also, if any of participating corporations were based in the United States, they would be subject to the terms of the USA Patriot Act, which gives the U.S. government access to private information contained in the mail.

The future of Canada Post is being decided by a panel of appointed “experts” and the public has been left in the dark. I hope you will use your influence as an MP to push for public consultation and take a strong stand against the deregulation of Canada Post.
