The Message:

Congratulations on your recent election to Parliament.

I am writing to ask you to defend the role of public science in safeguarding the health and safety of Canadians.

Recent events underline the need for a greater role for government oversight through strong public science. After the recent listeriosis outbreak and repeated incidents of unsafe food, toys and other products making onto the market and into homes and kitchens, I am no longer confident that all the necessary steps are in place to protect us.

Now I understand that the federal government is implementing further steps to transfer responsibility to industry and shut down the laboratories and facilities required to protect the public interest.

Whether it is to ensure that the food on our table, our children’s toys or the medications we depend on are safe, or it is to protect the environment and ensure our security, I believe that we need independent public scientists with the right tools to do the job.

I urge you to stand up for public science in Parliament; to oppose the transfer of the responsibility to protect public health and safety to industry and to support measures that will ensure that Canadians can depend on public science.
