As a constituent in your riding, I urge you to ensure that the Standing Committee on Social Policy promptly studies Bill 156 (The Healthy Decisions for Healthy Eating Act) and push for its speedy enactment by the Legislature. The bill requires calorie labelling on menus at large chain-restaurants just as the governments of New York City, California and others have required. How can I make informed choices about menu items for me and my family if the restaurants don't provide any information at the point of purchase or, almost as bad, make me wait in line or check their websites to learn nutrition facts? Please help ensure this information is provided right on the menu. The bill also proposes to get synthetic trans-fat-laden oils out of foods sold in restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals, and other commercial foodservice outlets, just as the federal Trans Fat Task Force recommended, in vein, that the federal government nearly three years ago. Industrially produced trans fat has wisely already been out-lawed in Denmark, and in restaurants in California, New York City, and British Columbia. Please join other MPPs in ensuring that trans fat is not welcome in Ontario restaurant foods. Please urge the Chair of the Standing Committee on Social Policy, Mr. Shafiq Qaadri, to promptly begin studying Bill 156. Governments, citizens, and companies simply must make more efforts to prevent disease in the first place. Bill 156 is a good place to ensure that restaurants do their part and help better inform Ontarians so they can make INFORMED choices when eating out. Please help make Bill 156 become law (or explain to me why you oppose it).
